Last night Alarik asks me out of the blue, "Mom, have you ever had a date night where you didn't have to go to the bathroom?"  I don't know how he even know what date night is since Jesse and I don't do them.

This evening the two of us were eating dinner together when he suddenly says, "Mom, is this how far apart your hands are supposed to be when you're arrested?"
What the heck???

He followed that right up with an exasperated, "You know, I've been calling you Mom for, like, FOUR YEARS already!"

Every year I debate between school portraits and just taking them myself.  I'd made up my mind years ago to do them myself, then pre-school Scott came home with the most adorable proof sheet ever so I bought school ones.  Then school ones started to decline in quality with different photography companies coming in.  Here's the proof sheets the boys came home with last week.
Ok, glad I didn't pay for those.

Here's the ones we took yesterday in our yard.

Alarik insisted that he had to have his portrait taken with Peaches.  Why not?  It was a good way to get him to smile normally for his "real" picture; though I'm thinking this one would look pretty nice framed up in the living room.

We had a pretty nice and relaxing weekend around here.  I slept in both days until almost TEN AM - that is unheard of for me! I haven't been able to sleep in like that since college. It was pretty amazing.

Bekah had a volleyball tournament yesterday . The boys and I alternated between reading, screen time and cleaning.  The kids all camped out in the living room for late-night Netflix viewing last night.  We skipped church today since I woke up 15 minutes before it started...oops.  Jesse was on call so the kids and I made a grocery run.

Peaches is starting to fatten up a bit. She's got to be the best-fed pig in the state. We have everyone from grandmas to the daycare to the ambulance crew saving their slop for her.  It's Alarik's job to feed her.  That's probably why she likes him so much.  That, and all the visiting time he puts in.  :)

Fool kids will NOT leave my phone alone. I don't dare leave it unattended or I'll have hundreds of selfies on there.

Then they discovered how to add fun little icons to photos and my storage suffered even more.

Bekah enjoys a good pun.

But I'm not even sure what to say about this one:

The pet store lady either needs to brush up on her knowledge of compatible fish, or she underestimated Speedy's aggressiveness.  It was a sad morning in our house as poor little Socket passed away.  The first week and a half went great with all of them in the tank together.  Then we noticed Socket was swimming vertically and struggling really hard to do so.  It seems all her fins were still intact, etc. but we did see Speedy beating on her.  Speedy got removed to the Jar of Shame again, but Socket did not recover.  We decided that Speedy would have to live permanently in his new location.  Rocket and Q will stay in the fish tank.

Le sigh...

Monday at Kindergarten was "A" day.  Alarik came home with an ambulance crown which he said he'd had his teacher make big enough for Daddy.
He proudly presented it to him.

Yesterday was "B" day.  I asked Alarik what was on the crown for the day and he said it was a bumblebee but he hadn't made one.  I asked why not and he replied incredulously, "I'm not wearing that stupid-shaped thing on my head!"  😆

Meet Peaches.
Because two geckos wasn't enough.

Peaches is supposed to be fattened up and butchered.  I don't foresee this happening for a number of reasons:
  1. She's super cute.
  2. She has great personality.
  3. Alarik goes outside regularly just to visit her. And I do mean visit.  He sits and chats with her.
  4. Jesse loves owning a pig and is already perusing Craigslist for some "company" for her.
  5. I kind of like her too.  😀

Alarik: Mom, could God create another god?

Me:  Well...there is only one God so...

Scott:  Boy, that's a really good question! I bet He COULD if he wanted to.

Me:  Yes, because He can do anything.

Scott:  So how did he get to be here in the first place though?

Me:  Uh...God's ways are mysterious boys.  There are some things that we won't know until we can ask in heaven.

Scott:  Oh, you mean when we pass through to the other side of the big sheet with holes in it?

Me:  ???

Scott: I read this book once where the sky was a big sheet with holes in it and the stars are the lights of heaven shining through the holes.

Me.  Yep.  That's exactly what I mean.

The much-anticipated first day of Kindergarten finally arrived for Mr. Alarik.  He complained that I woke him up too early and then he had too much time to just sit and wait.

When it was time to leave at last, he wanted a picture of "me and Dad with our lunchboxes".

And I had to have one of the siblings with their little brother.

Can you believe he didn't even want me to bring him to his room?  Nope. He said Scott could walk him there.

There they all go.

He had a GREAT first day! I enjoyed hearing all that he had to say about it. He said he learned that his magic number is 5. This must have something to do with classroom organization because he said Jessie R. is number 4 so she's just ahead of him whenever they line up.
I asked if he made any new friends and he said he did.  He didn't know his name, but he did remember that he was number 10 and that he had a Spider-Man lunchbox.  The important things, you know.
Alarik played Legos during choice time.  I asked who he played with and he said, "The twins. So I learned that I CAN get along with the twins!".  I have no idea why he ever decided that he couldn't get along with them, but I'm glad he found the opposite.  And he said that he and Elias had gotten along all day which was good because they had fought during Vacation Bible School. So Elias had the idea that next time at VBS they could both be nice and get along.  Ah, Kindergarten logic is so solid.

It was very strange to me to not have a reason to drive to Stephie's daycare this morning.  I'm not sure I like being a mom whose kids are all in school.  But there's no turning back now!

Meet our newest additions:
Three tiger barbs named Rocket, Q, and Socket.  Remember the boys pooled their money for a fish tank?  Well, Speedy ended up being aggressive and did not take to his tank mates who all eventually fell victim to him.  So while we were at the pet store picking up Bekah and Scott's long awaited-for geckos, Alarik picked out three new fish that will supposedly thrive with Speedy.

And here are the two main characters: Speckles and Matches!

The kids saved long and hard to buy all the necessary accessories and the first round of food.  They wheeled and dealed with Uncle DRK for a free aquarium, and Jesse and I finally made good on the purchase of the geckos themselves.
They actually aren't as gross as I thought they would be.  And the kids love them.  The only thing I would have done differently is not get them right before school started. They are proving a big distraction in the mornings when we are trying to get out the door!

Bekah started off the morning yesterday with the skirt and tank top.  After I pointed out that it actually coordinated, she quickly added some plaid and striped/miss-matched socks to fix that.  Scott was happy in the same sweatshirt he wore for 95% of the last school year.

Alarik was really bummed that he didn't get to start school on the same day as his big brother and sister.  Today was his "Welcome Conference" where he and I went for a half-hour meeting with his teacher for baseline assessment and a little tour of the room.  He starts for real on Friday.

Big Hallway. Big Backpack. Little Boy!
